ReviewedO Canada! The opening words of the Canadian national anthem are a fitting exclamation for appreciating the country sometimes called the True North. Canada’s untouched wilderness, Arctic animals, and native peoples are all worthy of a shout-out. This read points out to capable young readers what makes Canada special.
Country Profiles explores the landscape, wildlife, people, customs, attractions and more in a concise format for upper elementary students. Each text begins with a well-known (tourist) attraction and then moves into specific information about the country. Each topic is a two-page spread that includes text, images, and photographs exploring the topic, along with bolded vocabulary to help students. The volumes end with a basic timeline of the nation, facts, glossary, and “To Learn More” section with additional texts and the factsurfer website. THOUGHTS: This is a nice series for teaching research because each volume follows the same structure.', Erin Bechdel, Beaver Area School District,'Attractive photos, well matched with text, are the strongest element of this set. The books all share a common format, beginning with an introductory photo and description of an iconic location, such as the Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China, or Stonehenge. Additional spreads locate each country and describe its landscape and climate, wildlife, population, schools, sports, foods, and celebrations, with content that is generally positive about it and its people. A "Fact Page" adds statistics, and directions for a children's game that is popular in the country and a recipe for a traditional dish are plus. VERDICT: A fine choice for introduction and basic reports.
