'In this latest volume in Bellwether Media’s Digging Up The Past series, young readers (grades 3 - 8) are introduced to Paleolithic Art and the Altamira Cave. 1 Located in northern Spain, Altamira is one of the most fascinating of the decorated Ice-Age caves to have been discovered in modern times. Although tourists are no longer allowed into the cave because of damage to the invaluable wall paintings, detailed replicas of the famous artwork can be viewed in the nearby Altamira Museum. Making use of a variety of high-quality, full-color photographs from the Altamira Museum (including an image of the famous polychrome chamber), Emily Oachs calls attention to some of the most interesting aspects of the ancient artwork of Altamira. This includes information about the Paleolithic people who visited the cave as much as 36,000 years ago and who painted beautiful murals on the walls between 22,000 - 13,000 years ago, the role of Don Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola and his young daughter María in discovering and first studying Altamira’s magnificent artwork, and what studying this ancient artwork has taught scientists about our ancient ancestors. A two-page timeline affords readers a chronological history of Altamira Cave at a glance. A brief glossary, index, and list of additional suggested readings are helpful additions. The Cave of Altamira is suitable reading for the young caver, artist, or budding cave archaeologist in the family. The book offers parents and teachers an opportunity for discussion of a wide range of potential subjects, ranging from anthropology to environmental awareness.', Danny A.
