Review
'With a focus on scientists investigating such unexplained phenomena as Atlantis, haunted houses, and UFOs, this series describes how the mysteries developed, research attempting to prove their existence, and real possible causes. A STEM emphasis includes charts, graphs profiles, and sidebars with technological tools.', Angela Leeper, Booklist,'Combining high-interest paranormal topics and accessible text, these titles in the Investigating the Unexplained series target reluctant readers with success. Each volume piques curiosity with an opening fictional interaction between individuals who are investigating the unexplained phenomenon. Successive short chapters describe how the mystery developed and evolved throughout history, research with which scientists have tried to prove it, and some of the real possible causes. The chapters also include a strong STEM focus as explanations, charts, graphs, profiles, and sidebars highlight technological tools used by scientists. Atlantis describes how the legend of this island began with Plato, and then dips into the numerous (unsuccessful) underwater excavations to locate this lost city. The Bermuda Triangle focuses on the study of weather and rogue, or extreme, waves and how they may have contributed to lost aircraft and ships. ESP conveys its rise in popularity in the late 1800s, types of ESP or “sixth sense,” and numerous related studies. Ghost Ships identifies a few famous missing ships and how a fata morgana mirage may cause individuals to see ghost-like ships on the horizon. Photos of scientists and technology in action, archival photos, eerie recreations, and dark-colored backgrounds give the series an appropriate spooky feel. Additional back matter allows students to explore these subjects in more detail.', Angela Leeper, Booklist
