Review
'The Pirate Tales series includes six texts that tell the historical accounts of famous pirates in an engaging graphic comic format. The books tell the accounts of historical figures of Blackbeard, Sir Francis Drake, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Henry Morgan, and Ching Shih. The digitally illustrated graphic stories tell the exciting plights of each pirate, while denoting key events and quotes from history through the use of red text. Additional text features such as a glossary of key academic vocabulary and weblinks to additional resources make these informational texts useful to units of study in History, English, or Geography subject areas across grade levels 4-12. The texts would be best paired with additional primary source documents and other informational texts that offer counter perspectives to the dominant colonial narratives presented. The graphic story format would make this history accessible to a wide range of readers.', Lisa Ortmann, Ph.D; Literacy Education Professor, Gustavus Adolphus College,'In this series, the reader learns about famous pirates that sailed around the world. This non-fiction graphic novel series brings the pirates to life and is very engaging. These books include numerous non-fiction text features to support the reader in understanding the facts in the book. Some non-fiction text features included in each book are a table of contents, a map, headings, bold-faced words, a timeline, a glossary, and an index. This is a great series for a more mature audience as there are numerous adult themes within this series. For the mature audience, the graphic novel is sure to entertain readers on an epic adventure!', Charity Nadrozny, 2nd Grade Teacher, Illinois, Educator Review
