ReviewedAll About Arachnids introduces readers to the world’s most interesting spiders. With a high-interest STEM approach, each book focuses on a specific arachnid, detailing its anatomy, many kinds of species, habitats, diets, and behaviors. Vibrant, full-color photos and labels complement the text to show the unique features of each arachnid. Take a Look! infographics provide additional information, such as detailed body diagrams, range maps, and the molting process. Each title also includes sidebars, a glossary, a table of contents, an index, and a STEM activity.
Young readers will have the opportunity to learn about some well-known spiders in the eight volume series All About Arachids. Each volume shines a spotlight on a specific variety of spider, elaborating on the spider’s diet, habitat, anatomy, reproduction, and behavior. Designed for early readers, each volume features three chapters with short paragraphs and sentences. The text is greatly enhanced by the inclusion of numerous high quality photographs, which provide detailed, close up views of the spiders and their webs. Sidebars highlight interesting facts and backmatter includes a glossary and index. Each volume also features an activity page with a STEM-style activity to extend learning (for example, build a spider web with popsicle sticks and yarn). THOUGHTS: This reviewer isn’t necessarily a fan of spiders, but after reading the volumes on Garden Spiders and Black Widows, I have a greater appreciation for these amazing and complex arachnids. Young readers likewise will learn much from these volumes. Ideal for readers with an interest in creepy crawlies or for young researchers, this series is deserving of a spot on elementary library shelves.
