Instruments and their origins and characteristics of subgenres are explained. About half of each book is filled with detailed profiles of performers ranging from early innovators to current stars. Current subgenres, such as hyperpop are included. Written at a forth-grade level these books could entertain emerging readers through eigth grade. VERDICT: A strong alternative to formulaic musician biographies.
