ReviewedHistory is littered with odd stories of unusual events and places that can’t be fully explained. What’s truly happening in Area 51? What mysterious mechanisms are at work that make the Bermuda Triangle so deadly? And how did a boatload—and entire colony—of people simply vanish? It’s time to explore these mysteries. Engaging hi-lo content draws in 5th through 6th grade readers while a 2nd to 3rd grade reading level makes uncovering the truth fun as well as accessible.
In sparse text, several famous disappearances and conspiracies are introduced. Readers may be interested to learn more about Area 51 or solve the mystery of the Roanoke disappearance. These titles are image-heavy with a few sentences per page, and the images are largely stock with few internally produced illustrations. The use of maps across titles is excellent, often repeating the same map but zooming in to areas where different events occurred, which may be of use in the classroom. Written at a third- to fourth-grade level, these titles are appropriate for grades four to six, making it a very close hi-lo title. The sparseness of the text on each page, however, may help an emerging reader feel more successful as they turn the pages as quickly as their peers. VERDICT: A good choice, but there may be stronger titles on these popular topics
