The On the Hunt series is a dynamic and engaging collection designed to introduce reluctant readers to the exciting world of hunting. This high-interest series combines accessible text with vivid, action-filled photographs to keep students turning the pages.
Each book not only explains the basics of the hunt, such as equipment and gear, techniques, and safety rules, but also includes special features that help readers build knowledge in an interactive way. From range maps that highlight where animals live to gear graphics that show essential tools, every spread offers opportunities for readers to connect with the content.
Deer Hunting covers different types of hunting, including short and far range and bow and arrow hunting. Duck Hunting delivers extra facts such as the continued success of selling duck stamps which helps raise money to care for duck habitats. Readers will be fascinated by the animal information revealed in Elk Hunting. Elks often “bugle” after sunset, before sunrise, and at night. Hunters have to search fields in a zig-zag pattern to flush out pheasants as shown in Pheasant Hunting. Turkey Hunting showcases funny facts like the scat fact: male and female turkeys make different poop patterns. People can learn about a more rare form of hunting in Wild Hog Hunting. Wild hogs can be dangerous and cause over $2.5 billion in damages each year. What makes this series stand out is its ability to blend learning with adventure.
The clear focus on safety, ethics, and responsibility also makes this series a trusted resource for educators and families. Perfect for lower and middle-grade students, especially those who love the outdoors, this series
SLJ Review of On the Hunt
The books in this series discuss the basics of hunting organized by type of animal. Not a philosophical text on the morality of hunting, these books do discuss the benefits of hunting for population control and the reduction of invasive species.
Vocabulary about hunting and the animals themselves, gear, preparation, and licensing are all covered in these short titles. Worldwide maps of the range of these animals and pictures of the animals in their habitats provide visual aids. They also discuss the importance of safety and strategies hunters use to keep themselves and others safe.
Written at a fourth grade reading level, these books are recommended by the publisher for grades three to eight, so they would be appropriate for an elementary student reading at grade level or a middle school student reading below grade level.
VERDICT: A good purchase for communities with an interest in hunting.
