Booklist Review of Sugar Gliders

Soaring in with maximum cuteness, a sugar glider flits from branch to branch, lapping up sap and eventually returning to its family nest in a hollow bit of tree trunk. Close-up photos of these squirrel-like creatures are the focal points of each page or spread and complement the book’s limited text.

Simple sentences with repetitive structure and vocabulary convey basic information about sugar glider appearance and behavior. Several spreads are dedicated to following joeys’ growth from pouch to riding on Mom’s back to gliding away.

There are a few misses here—the term marsupial is never used or defined, nor is the sugar glider’s natural range ever mentioned—but these aren’t deabreakers. Youngsters will be drawn to the adorable star of this Marsupials series (6 titles) selection and likely come away wanting to learn more.
