Our History
John Martin has always had a passion for learning and literacy, which led him to found Bellwether Media in 2005, the first of our four publishers. With a focus on consistent design, a carefully leveled reading approach, and an emphasis on meeting hi-lo reading needs, Bellwether's catalog grew from hundreds to thousands of titles. Its mission was clear: to improve literacy and spark the imaginations of children who crave more excitement than the average reader.
As Bellwether continued to thrive, John and his business partner, Gabe Kaufman, decided to expand their vision. In 2012, they established our second publisher, Jump! Library. Aimed to foster literacy and a lifelong love of learning through curriculum-aligned books that combine vibrant colors, engaging designs, high-interest topics, and carefully leveled text, Jump! captivates young readers and encourages reading success.
John and Gabe later acquired Bearport Publishing, bringing it to Minneapolis to broaden their collection of titles designed to excite kids about reading, especially those who struggle or are reluctant. With a focus on compelling topics like animals, sports heroes, and mysterious places, Bearport books are crafted with special attention to text length, vocabulary, and the picture-text relationship. Bold photographs paired with limited text on each page make these books inviting and accessible to struggling readers.
The final piece to our publishing family, Kaleidoscope Books, was founded in 2018 to help young readers develop the information literacy skills they need to navigate our ever-evolving information landscape.
With over 3,000 unique titles spanning a diverse range of series and imprints from our four publishers, the need for a streamlined purchasing process became clear. As a result, FlutterBee Education Group was created in 2024, bringing all four of our publishers under one roof for an easy and convenient shopping experience.
