Garland Independent School District Review of Creating Titanic: The Ship of Dreams
Highly recommended. This informational text focuses on how the Titanic was designed and constructed. Other than a couple of short sentences, there is no mention of the lack of lifeboats and ultimate sinking of the Titanic. This book solely focuses on the “dream” of what Titanic was supposed to be. The book contains many nonfiction text elements that are referenced in the TEKS and would be very useful to teachers introducing informational text to their students. The author has linked a website at the end of the book that connects readers to an interactive vocabulary crossword, as well as several other informational websites. Students and teachers who are fans of the Titanic would find this book enjoyable. – Amy Hubschman

Young Titanic fans will reach for these six volumes that cover almost every facet of the ship and its sinking. In Last Hours, for example, several diagrams and cutaways illuminate the various inner workings and levels of the boat and how exactly the iceberg damaged the vessel. Kids will learn of the ship’s construction, the passengers (many of whom were rich and famous), the fatal collision, and even related ghosts and mysterious hauntings. In all of the books, the language is clear, and there are ample brightly colored drawings and photographs to complement the text. VERDICT: A well-crafted presentation of a timeless topic. Expect a high demand from Titanic aficionados.
