Sea Otter Pups

From the Series Water Babies

A mother sea otter gives birth to her pup in the ocean. Then, as she floats on her back on the water’s surface, she lifts the little pup up from the water so it can feed and sleep while snuggled into her warm, furry chest. So begins the life of this marine mammal.

In Sea Otter Pups, children will read how this little water baby receives its mother’s undivided attention until it has learned the swimming, diving, and hunting skills it needs to leave mom and go off to begin its adult life. The colorful interior spreads and gorgeous photos of sea otter pups are sure to delight emergent readers.

Sea Otter Pups

With thick, shaggy fur and gentle-looking eyes, sea otter pups sure are cute. This title in the Water Babies series simply, and briefly, introduces pups, mamas, and their habits and habitat. Kids will come away with tidbits of information: sea otters are as big as medium-sized dogs, they like to stay close to the shore, and they sleep with kelp wrapped around them to stay anchored in one place. Each spread tackles a simple category or question—"Sea otter food"—and contains basic diagrams and adorable photos, which have captions (like “floating pup”) superimposed on top. Also helpful for little ones is the pictorial glossary, which reinforces vocabulary. The small trim size is fitting, given the small pups depicted inside, and emergent readers may not be able to resist giving the book a squeeze.
