It's a Disaster!
This series offers an array of vibrant photographs and bold page layouts introducing young readers to the causes, safety precautions, and devastating destruction related to natural disasters. The text matches the destruction and intensity depicted on each page; these extreme events will engage emerging and reluctant readers. Challenging or scientific vocabulary is printed in bold text. Additional facts and information appear in boxes in a slightly smaller font, offering a nice balance of fact finding and reading practice. A list of facts and a picture glossary as well as written definitions appears at the end of each book. Young researchers will appreciate that each volume also includes a list of topic-related further reading selections. This set will complement science curriculum objectives pertaining to weather patterns or plate tectonics while also satisfying readers who enjoy extreme nature or survival stories. Recommended.

These fun books will captivate young readers. Though some photos are on the fuzzy side, they’re generally action-filled and will entice readers, while informative text boxes provide additional material. The books also present some content on how people can stay safe during these frightening weather conditions (for instance, advising going to higher ground during a flood). Exclamatory text and short, concise sentences (“Boom! A thunderstorm begins”) make these books accessible but still exciting.
