Narrative nonfiction text is written as a high-interest story that brings the reader into the daily life of the animal’s world. The illustrations are striking, and captioned in a word bubble format to engage the beginning or reluctant reader/researcher. Books include nonfiction text features such as maps and lists resources for more information on the subject. This series is a worthwhile addition to the elementary library.
Snowshoe Hare
Kids may or may not have heard of the snowshoe hare, but they will certainly be intrigued by what they learn in this compact title, part of the Arctic Animals: Life outside the Igloo series. A fine example of an animal suited to his surroundings, the hare has a snow-white coat in the winter that sheds in the spring to become brown for better camouflage. The hare’s large feet also help him hop away from predators. The book includes information about the hare’s home, diet, and life cycle. Text and small photos are mostly set against ice-blue pages, but there are also several full-page color photos of the cute critter. Facts are simply but effectively presented in running text, captions, and boxes. Kids will learn a lot here, and the interesting back matter, including a camouflage quiz, will spur them onward.
